The first sporting event at the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington will not be a football game in the traditional US sense. Instead it will be a CONCACAF Gold Cup soccer quarterfinal doubleheader on July 19th. Depending upon the upcoming draw, it could easily feature the US National Soccer Team. The Gold Cup is a twelve country tournament held every two years that crowns the champion of the North and Central America and The Caribbean region. The tournament will be contested in during July with games being held in 13 American cities. The Gold Cup kicks off July 3rd. The quarterfinal doubleheader will be the only Gold Cup games here in North Texas and the Dallas Cowboys Stadium will have a 78,000 capacity for the matches. The stadium in Arlington will be one of four venues that will have a synthetic surface. Grass will be placed over the existing artificial surface for the Gold Cup final in Giants Stadium on July 26. Cowboys' spokesperson Brett Daniels said there have been conversations to host more soccer matches at the stadium this year.
