Grapevine girls soccer firmly in control of 6-5A

Defense is the name of the game for Grapevine.  With only a few games left in the season the girls soccer team is running away with the 6-5A title.

"There is a belief right now that we aren't going to give up any goals," Grapevine coach Ryan Davis said. "Right now, we are defending better than we ever did last year. We are cooking."

On offense, Grapevine's top two goal scorers are committed to play at high level programs next year. Kelsey Shimmick (12 goals) is headed to Texas, and Heather Magee (9 goals) is going to LSU.  But the Mustangs (15-2-2, 10-0) success starts with their defense. In their 10 district wins, Grapevine has given up only four goals.

"We have won several games 1-0 or 2-1," Davis said. "We feel like our defense will keep us in every game. Then we've gotten important goals when we need them."

The Mustangs have six district games remaining before the playoffs begin. Davis and his team hopes the tight defense will lead to a deep playoff run.

"You always hear it, that defense wins championships, but that's just the truth in soccer," Davis said. "We believe if we get one goal we can win. We might not play very well on offense in a game, but we can always defend well."
