Grapevine rides gift to win over Plano

Day two of the Winter Blast Tournament gave us matchup of a pair of squads with clear playoff aspirations as Grapevine hosted Plano.  Grapevine has a very talented team that moved to 5A in a very easy district that should allow them the opportunity for a solid playoff run.  Plano also has a ton of talent, but must navigate the ultra tough District 6-6A.

Grapevine had the first chance of the afternoon from a corner kick in the 8th minute as the ball deflected over the Plano crossbar.  A couple of minutes later Grapevine had the lead thanks to a massive gift from the Plano defense.  Jordan Christian picked up the ball for the Wildcats about forty yards from his own goal and decided to play a square ball to the other side of the field.  Mistakenly he made a perfect pass to Mustang striker Rene Renteria who had a clear path in on the Plano goal where he easily finished for the 1-0 lead.  Ouch.

Plano looked like they had a goal in them as they went on the attack to try to get the gifted goal back.  The Grapevine defense led by captain Holden Flora was up to the task and with ten minutes to go before halftime it was still a one goal Grapevine lead.

Another mistake from Plano almost allowed the Mustangs to make it two as the goalkeeper punted a ball straight to Garrett Hammer who raced towards goal.  The Plano defense intervened at the last second and put the ball out for a corner.

Grapevine opened the second half stringing several passes together in the Plano third leading to a shot from August Bergjans that flew just wide of the back post.  Rene Renteria volleyed wide a minute later and Grapevine were on the push for a second goal.  They almost had it when Chad Sahinkaya unleashed a wicked left footed strike from the 18 that went through the keeper's hands and hit him squarely in the face.  Twenty minutes to go and Plano were barely hanging on.

The Wildcats began to push back though earning a pair of corner kicks and a set piece with fifteen minutes to play.  Could they find the tying goal?  The simple answer was no, and they never even really got close as Grapevine closed out the 1-0 victory and moved to 2-0 on the season.
