Grapevine rewarded with playoff matchup with Coppell

The Grapevine boys soccer team has faced an uphill battle the entire second half of the season.  They fought hard and went unbeaten in their final seven district matches to earn a playoff berth.  The reward?  A playoff match with the defending state champions from Coppell Thursday night.

Not much of a reward eh?

Coppell won the powerful District 5-5A which most experts agree is the most difficult soccer district in the entire state, but Coppell may not be so happy either.  Instead of getting a 4th placed squad from another district in their opening playoff game they get a red-hot and confident Grapevine team.  Top it off by having to play the game at Grapevine's home stadium.  Not ideal for the champs.

Coach Heath Bullard said he anticipates a strong game from the Cowboys and said that his team will have to continue what it has been doing in the second half of district. “They are very skilled and have great control,” Bullard said of Coppell. “They possess the ball very well, and have a lot of speed and quickness. We're going to have to play our best game to win this game."

Grapevine capped of their improbable run to the playoffs by scoring a late goal to beat previously unbeaten Irving Nimitz last week.  “I've never seen anything like this,” Bullard said. “It's a amazing. The kids are jumping up and down and supporting each other. It's great, and we have keep doing what we've been doing. We've been playing strong defense, giving up between .75 and .8 goals per game, and we have to make sure we keep doing that, score some goals and we should be fine.”

Good luck with the defending state champions coming to town with a team that is just as talented and powerful as the squad that took the Texas 5A state title last year.
