Grapevine girls lose heartbreaker in Penalties

This one will sting for a long, long time.  Comfortably ahead 2-0 at halftime and on their way to a coveted Texas State Title things went downhill as Frisco Centennial rallied to win the final match in penalty kicks sending the game to overtime with only three minutes remaining in regulation.

The opening half was all Mustangs as they raced out to a two goal lead against the shell-shocked girls from Frisco.  Goals from sophomore Sophia Smith and Jordan Slim lifted Grapevine.  The girls left the field at the halftime whistle confident and in control.

Frisco Centennial regrouped and the second half was an entirely different affair.  The Titans pressured the Mustangs into second half mistakes and the tide turned completely.  Suddenly, Grapevine were on their heels as Frisco began to dominate possession.

“I think we just got too comfortable going into the second half with the 2-0 lead,” said Jordan Slim, a senior midfielder. “It kind of showed out there that we were too comfortable, and we weren’t pressing as much or trying to score as much as we were in the first half.”

From there, Centennial forward Katelyn Termini took over.  She would score two unassisted goals to send the game to overtime. The dramatic tying goal would come with only three minutes left in the game.  Neither team would find the net in the overtime period and penalty kicks were needed to find a victor.  It would be Frisco Centennial goalkeeper Payton Jamieson who would be the hero as she stopped three Grapevine spot kicks.

“It’s a cruel game,” Grapevine coach Steve McBride said. “When we were moving in the first half, things were going our way. It’s a tale of two halves.”
