Arlington Heights girls rally past Cleburne

The Arlington Heights girls soccer team has not faced much adversity this soccer season.  In fact, it has literally been weeks since the team has trailed in a match at all.  Thursday night they found themselves in a hole against a solid Cleburne girls soccer team.

Cleburne had taken the shock lead in only the 12th minute of play as Charity Gonzales knocked in a rebound off a Brandy Villasana shot.  Arlington Heights set about the fightback from there as they bossed most of the rest of the match.

Credit to Clebrune as they stood strong well into the second half despite the Heights possession and pressure.  Finally in the 57th minute of play India Wentz tied the game.  The game was even but Arlington Heights still had work to do.  With only 3 minutes left when Ella Iker-Smith scored the winner.

“I’ve been waiting on plays like that this season,” Ella Iker-Smith said. “I just looked up and there the ball was. I saw the keeper come at me so I just tried to kick it past her motion.”

Next up for Heights will be a difficult test against powerful Trophy Club Nelson on Monday night at Farrington Field.

“I’m just really happy with how they kept their composure and stayed with it,” Heights coach Marcus Daugherty said. “It was in doubt, for sure, but they just wouldn’t quit and then we got some great goalkeeping tonight also.”
