Colleyville Heritage scores late to tie Grapevine

Tuesday gave us a real treat as neighbors and monster rivals Colleyville Heritage met up with Grapevine in a high school soccer clash.  Expect a battle in this one as the two teams field very talented squads with eyes on a successful district run and playoffs.

The Mustangs are coming off a great showing at the Winter Blast Tournament from last weekend.  Not only did Grapevine win all three of their matches, they did not allow a single goal posting a 5-0 goal differential.

The Panthers also had a nice start to the season going unbeaten in their opening three games which included an impressive victory over powerful Allen High School.

The match started quietly as both sides searched the ow for a weakness.  Heritage opened in a four with two center backs while Grapevine came out in a traditional old school sweeper-stopper system led by Holden Flora.  The Panthers fired the first shot of the evening as Pierce Coplin rolled wide from 25 yards.

Grapevine got their first good attack in the 11th minute as a Colleyville clearance that was headed out for a throw in bounced off the referee and stayed in bounds.  The resulting cross led to a Mustang corner kick.  The Panthers were caught napping on the restart as Grapevine started short allowing Chad Sahinkaya to whip in a cross under no pressure.  The perfect ball found Victor Herrera all alone on the back post to bury the header for the early lead.

Grapevine served notice they were intent on scoring more as Sahinkaya ripped one over the crossbar from long range in the 17th minute.  Heritage were not gong to give up the fight that easily though.  There was still plenty of time left in this one and in the 23rd minute Colleyville earned a free kick 30yards out from the Grapevine goal.  Senior Jaime Nenclares floated in a perfect ball leaving the keeper off his line in "no mans land".  The attackers should have done better, but were unable to head the ball home and Grapevine scrambled the ball to safety.

Colleyville were on the front foot pushing Grapevine back into their own half.  Could the Panthers get the tying goal before the halftime break?  Colleyville went on the attack again in the 30th as Jonathan Martin made a long dribbling run through the midfield.  As Martin got near the penalty area he took a nudge and went down easily.  The ref bought it and awarded the dangerous free kick.  Ryan Jakszta ripped a powerful free kick past the Mustang wall, but Grapevine keeper Ricardo Sanche was up to the task making a diving save.  Grapevine were under pressure and hanging on to their thin lead.   The Mustangs held the 1-0 lead at the break, but few would argue Colleyville were the better side in the opening 40 minutes of play.

The second half began just as the first ended with Heritage controlling the game.  Despite completely bossing the midfield and backline, the Panthers were clearly lacking the forward to put the ball in the net.  A goofy referee call gifted the Mustangs a dangerous free kick in the 41st, but Sahinkaya's free kick one hopped right into the arms of Heritage keeper Josh Clarke.

Grapevine began to even up the game the next fifteen minutes moving the majority of play into the midfield and getting pressure off their backline.  Another Sahinkaya free kick in the 64th forced Clarke to punch the ball behind for a corner kick.

As the game moved into the final minutes it just did not look like Colleyville Heritage were going to be able to find an answer to unlock the stout Grapevine defense.  Then the Grapevine defense made a mistake and Heritage pounced for the tying goal.  A miscommunication in front of goal left the ball sitting in danger.  Keeper Cesar Quezada froze and allowed Jonathan Martin to race around him and place the ball into the net to even the match with four minutes to play.

The game would end 1-1 between the two rivals.   Grapevine won't be happy yielding the soft late goal, but it was definitely a game that Colleyville Heritage did not deserve to lose.
