Ariana Morrison did everything humanly possible to keeper her Trophy Club Nelson team in the State Final.  She made saves.  Took hits.  Played her heart out.  But Highland Park freshman Kate Summers got the final shot past Morrison in the 10th round of a shootout, giving the Scots a 1-0 victory against Nelson in the Class 4A state soccer championship at Birkelbach Field. Highland Park made four shots to three for Nelson in the shootout phase to end the Bobcats' dramatic playoff run.

"I just kept battling. I didn't want to disappoint my teammates," said Morrison, who had seven saves. "This is a tough way to end my senior year."
The teams each had scoring chances in the first three minutes, then settled into a defensive battle the rest of the day. "We liked being the underdog," Morrison said. "That just got us stoked a little more."

Morrison was superb in Georgetown, with two shutouts over two games against the state's best. Highland Park's powerful offense had not been shut out in regulation play all season.

"We get to state and go two games without a goal and then lose in a shootout when it's a 50-50 chance that you are going to make the goal," Nelson coach Philip Salyer said. In the shootout, Nelson's Darla Hyde, Ann Odom and Macy Comb all scored.

Hyde opened the shootout, sliding a shot past Highland Park keeper Sara Howley. Highland Park kept it going with goals by Megan Gittens, Sara Summers and Ellen Heighten.
Nelson played with an aiding wind in the first half but could not score. The Bobcats were equally strong in the second half at staying with Highland Park's speed.

Marchelle Davis led the team's effort on offense with several shots on goal. But she could not connect, as she did in Friday's 1-0 defeat of Cedar Park.
Besides Morrison, four seniors finished their careers for the Bobcats: Suzanne Reckmeyer, Katlynne Dahan, Veronica Donato and Peyton Roennau.
