Injury time winner lifts FC Dallas to opening win

Talk about saving it to the last.  FC Dallas looked destined for a disappointing scoreless draw at home on opening night.  That is until Blas Perez headed home a wayward shot from Moises Hernandez for a 92nd minute winner sending the crowd of almost 16,000 into a frenzy.

Until then it didn't look to be FC Dallas' night.  A few missed opportunities and a couple of players having a real howler of an evening allowed the visiting San Jose Earthquakes hope of getting out of Texas with a result.  The worst team in the MLS last year, the Earthquakes do not look much batter this year.  The sputtering FCD offense nearly let them off the hook.

Fabian Castillo did not have his typical game as he kept finding himself inside most of the evening.  He never seemed able to beat the three or four SJ players he encountered in there.  Stay outside Castillo.  You only need to beat one out there.

Defensively the passing was not good.  Matt Hedges single handedly gave SJ their best chances of the game with wayward passes.  And then there was Atiba Harris who was an absolute disaster.  How he stayed on the field for 88 minutes is beyond belief.  I have U12s that handle the ball better.  It all added up to a game against an inferior opponent that Blas Perez had to rescue at the death with an opportunistic header.

Three points on opening night are not to be scoffed at though and the team will definitely take it.  Happily it was just the first game of the season so there is time to work out the kinks.  A more talented opponent arrives next weekend in Sporting Kansas City.

“I think it shows that we never give up,” FC Dallas midfielder Tesho Akindele said. “I always felt like we were going to score the whole time. I felt that we were going to score a goal and we did. I think it’s just a huge testament to our team and the kind of mentality that Oscar [Pareja] has put into us.”
