It was a battle of two former private school powers in the UIL Class 5A Texas boys soccer state championship game. It was a well played battle between two of the best defensive squads in the state of Texas. Neither team was willing to break in the tense final.
The match was competitive and physical as there were 32 fouls in the game. Dallas Jesuit had eight shots on goal, all saved by Strake Jesuit goalkeeper Jason Taffett. Strake Jesuit had six shots on goal and five were saved by Dallas Jesuit goalkeeper Ryan Aubrey, who was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
The game went scoreless through both overtime periods and a shootout was needed to decide the champion. Dallas Jesuit (25-0), ranked No. 1 nationally, won when goalie Ryan Aubrey denied all four shootout attempts by Strake Jesuit (27-1-1). Aubrey blocked two shots outright, and Strake Jesuit had a shot go wide off the post and another high over the net. David Reilly and Hansel Reyes converted their attempts for the Rangers.
For the first time in the history of the University Interscholastic League, a private school won a state championship.
