Keller Central rolls to Kyle Fritz Title

The Keller Central boys soccer team returned from Houston last weekend with their eyes squarely on taking the title at their very own Kyle Fritz Memorial Tournament.  A solid field stood in their way, but the boys were focused and the talented side rolled to four straight victories in achieving their goal led by a dynamic offense that netted twelve goals in the four matches.

In the opening game of the tournament CFC faced off against a Grand Prairie side that had a great season last year. Keller Central were up to the challenge as the team was fired up for their first home game of the season. It turned out to be a wild game as the frenetic Grand Prairie style wound things up right from the start. Despite the action, the match went to halftime with neither team finding the back of the net. My would things change after the restart as the goals would come in bunches.  In fact, fans were treated to five goals in only a 20 minute span!

Evan Ripic put Keller Central in front in the 47th minute of play when Garrett Garwood skipped past a couple of GP players before slipping a nice pass to Ripic who cut in on his right foot and fired home.  It was Ripic again ten minutes later to make the score 2-0 in similar fashion cutting inside on his right. All comfortable right? Wrong!

Grand Prairie would not go quietly as they grabbed one back in the 62nd. But CFC would restore the two goal lead only a minute later though as a long throw in fell to Logan Dierking at the top of the GP penalty area where he fired a right footed blast into the GP net.  Comfortable again right? Wrong!

With only two minutes left the visitors would score once again cutting the lead to 3-2.  Grand Prairie almost tied the match at the death as a wild scramble after a corner kick was finally turned away by the defense.  Quite an entertaining match as Keller Central opened the Kyle Fritz Memorial with a hard fought victory.

A less than stellar Gainesville squad posed little threat in the second match of group play.  Josh Starkey was only called into action a couple of times while CFC scored a whopping five 2nd half goals to run out easy 6-0 winners.  Garrett Garwood notched four goals in the comprehensive victory.

The final group game pitted CFC against Colleyville Heritage with a spot in the final on the line.  Colleyville had scouted CFC the night before and they were prepared defensively to deal with the potent Central attack.  The game went to halftime scoreless, but CFC would jump ahead just after the break as a long Josh Starkey freekick found Evan Ripic who put the home side into the lead.  It would turn out to be the only goal of the match as Starkey and the defense threw down the shutout to win it 1-0.

North Side awaited in the Saturday afternoon championship match. The Fort Worth squad were able to hang in there for 30 minutes, but that was all as the Keller Central class eventually took over.  It was two goals in flash style that broke the scoreless game open.  Josh Hawkins scored off a Garrett Garwood assist in the 31st minute of play with Trenton Magryta doubling the lead only three minutes later. Once again the defense would close the door from there posting their third consecutive shutout of the tournament.

No better way to start the home season than to sweep to the title at the Kyle Fritz Memorial Cup.  Keller Central definitely look to be the real deal this year if they can continue to play solid defense.  They are clearly going to score loads of goals with that offense.  The team moves to 6-1 on the young season with a trip to face Duncanville next on the schedule.
