Hmmmm Keller Fossil Ridge?  Seems the boys soccer team is much improved this year over the past few seasons.  The high schools in the Kyle Fritz Memorial Soccer Tournament found out first hand this weekend as Fossil rolled to the tournament title.

After dispatching a soft LD Bell side 4-0 on Thursday KFR took out a decent FW North Side team 3-1 on Friday afternoon.  That set up a showdown with local rivals Keller High School on Saturday morning for a place in the final.  Keller Fossil Ridge ground out a 1-1 draw which was enough to win the group and send favorites Keller packing.

The final was another local showdown as Keller Fossil Ridge faced off against a Keller Central side that had made a regional playoff run the season before.

It was a quiet opening half as the Central defense held Ridge forward Anthony Powell in check for the opening 40 minutes of play.  Powell had scored twice the day before against North Side.  The best chance of the opening half fell to Sean Garcia as a long throw was allowed to bounce inside the Fossil Ridge penalty area.  Garcia raced in and flicked his header off the crossbar leaving the match scoreless at the break.

The second half had more life to it as a tough tackle from Michael Tengvall was paid back by a Fossil defender.  Tempers were on edge as Central began to boss the game, putting Fossil Ridge under pressure for an extended period.  Fossil Ridge Brazilian exchange goalkeeper Joaquin was up to the task though as he turned away a left footed volley that was destined for the top corner of the net in the 66th minute.  Minutes earlier Central forward Fabian Linares saw his header come back off the crossbar as he looked to have given Keller Central the lead.

With only 7 minutes to play the scoreless tie was finally broken and it all started with a goalkick.  Joaquin lofted a 40 yard ball into the midfield where Patrick Nuss won the challenge.  The ball was hoofed another 40 yards up from there where stud striker Anthony Powell latched onto it.  Powell deftly rounded the goalkeeper and slotted home for the winning goal.  Keller Fossil Ridge had pulled the upset winning the Kyle Fritz Memorial 1-0.

So just what have we learned from the opening two weeks of high school soccer play? District 4-5A seems to be wide open.  Keller Central, Southlake, Keller and Richland are all four not as strong as last year and Keller Fossil Ridge is clearly improved.  It is going to be a wild and wooly fight for the district champion and four playoff spots from District 4-5A soccer!
