Keller 1 Keller Central 0 - Lucas free kick the difference

Tonight would be put up or shut up time for the Keller Indians boys soccer team. This match would decide where there focus would be for the rest of the district slate.  A win over 2nd place Keller Central and the Indians would throw their hat into the fight for the second playoff seed.  A loss and they would be in the fight to hang on to the third spot.  Even a draw here would likely leave them out of the top two picture.  On the other hand,  Keller Central would be needing a win to keep pace with Byron Nelson at the top of the district and keep them on the road to the big showdown between the two in a couple of weeks time.

Before we get to the story about the game play.  Let’s establish one thing.  This match was not about opportunities taken at all.  It was about chances missed.  And for Keller Central there were plenty of wasted chances.

It took less than a minute for Keller Central to signal their intentions as they floated a well placed free kick to the back post.  Sean Garcia was there to head the ball back across goal where an empty net awaited Abraham Deande.   Somehow he blew the header and put it over the crossbar from very close range.

The play went straight to the other end and Keller would earn a free kick of their own from thirty five yards.  Ben Lucas stood over the ball looking like he was going to go for goal from long range.  And that he did placing the long strike perfectly into the top right corner of the net past the helpless Josh Starkey. 1-0 Keller on a wonderful free kick.

In the 8th minute the home side would have a chance to make it 2-0 as a rash tackle from Michael Tengvall was whistled by the referee.  The foul was clearly inside the penalty area, but the referee placed the kick just outside the box where it was blazed over the top keeping the game 1-0.

A lot of excitement for only ten minutes.

A long throw in the 18th minute nearly tied the score as Alex Kimmel flicked the ball on where Sean Garcia went down for a header.  The ball was going to be a goal, but it struck the shin of a defender and went wide for a corner.

Once again the ball went straight to the other end where Keller almost doubled their lead.  The ball fell to Dillon Smith just outside the six yard box.  He looked sure to score, but Starkey made a great diving save to parry the shot away from danger.  Chances coming at both ends!

The final chance of the opening half fell to the visitors as they earned a free kick from just outside twenty yards.  Sean Garcia curled the ball on goal.  He placed it well but didn't put enough pace on the kick and it was easily saved.  To the half 1-0 Keller Indians.

The second half saw Central a bit more composed as they came out passing the ball better and building attacks rather than forcing things forward.  It paid off as they pushed Keller back into their own half and were threatening to tie the match.  As I said earlier though….missed chances were the name of this game.  Fabian Linares got into a great spot on the backpost but headed over the crossbar from close range.

An even better chance fell to Abraham Deande minutes later as a long throw in made its way to him unmarked in front of goal.  All he had to do was step into the ball and put it into the empty net.  Instead, he hesitated and backed up to get a better hit on the ball.  The delay was costly as he ended up whiffing the shot.  Should have been an easy goal.  The third simple finish Central had wasted to that point.

The final big chance once again fell to Deande and once again he blew it.  A simple header from close range once again.  And once again it was put over the crossbar.  Three easy close range headers.  Empty net on all three.  And all three headed over the crossbar.

The match ended 1-0 to Keller despite the tilted field.  It was their second win of the district season over Central and  a win that pulls them within a single point of Keller Central in 2nd place.  It gives the Indians momentum heading into their Friday matchup with first place Byron Nelson.
