Arlington Lamar slips past Keller Fossil Ridge in penalties

It was quite the battle between Keller Fossil Ridge and Arlington Lamar on Friday night at Birdville as the two met in an opening round playoff game.  The two teams were very evenly matched and it played out on the field.

The first half was a relatively quiet affair as neither side generated much of an attack from the run of play.  Keller Fossil Ridge's offensive star Anthony Powell spent the majority of the opening 40 roaming around in the midfield instead of staying up top.  It made the defensive job for Lamar relatively simple  as most of the time Powell got on the ball he was staring at three or four white jerseys in his way.

The only real offense came from set pieces.  Notably Fossil Ridge free kicks and Lamar's long throw-ins.  Nothing came from them other than a few oooh's and ahhh's  from the crowd.  Everything was to play for in the second 40 minutes.

The first chance after the break fell to Noah Powell when Lamar failed to clear a long throw in.  The loose ball fell to Noah who blazed the volley way over the goal.  Fossil was starting to push though and Anthony Powell poked one over the crossbar just a minute later. The momentum was short-lived though as a couple of fouls gave Lamar set pieces and flipped the field.  The game evened back up again with both sides clearly capable of winning a very even match.

In the 53rd minute Keller Fossil Ridge had their golden chance to grab the lead.  A long Cody Seidel free kick was not dealt with by the Lamar defense.   Once again the loose ball fell to Noah Powell who simply had to place it home from four yards out.  Instead he decided to blast the ball for some reason and once again launched it high over the crossbar.

Lamar was given new life and went on the attack from there.  They almost scored themselves moments later, but the low cross zipped through the six untouched.   They got a monster chance in the 64th when Fossil keeper Joaquin stepped way out of the box on a punt., but Joaquin fixed the problem by saving the shot.

With six minutes to play Carlos Flores cut inside on the dribble slipping a ball in behind the Fossil defense where a Lamar player put it in the net.  The Lamar crowd went wild but the linesman ruled the play offside.  Easily the correct call.  Overtime here we come.

The only play of note in the first overtime turned out to be Arlington Lamar's best chance of the game.  Joaquin had to race off his line to block a shot leaving a juicy rebound from ten yards out.  The low shot was fired on frame, but two Fossil defenders were waiting on the goal line to clear it at the last second.

Anthony Powell nearly won it in the 98th minute as he ran down a Cody Seidel long ball, but his shot rolled a couple feet wide.  Lamar went right back though and saw Flores curl a twenty yard shot just over the crossbar.  Penalty kick time!

Cody Seidel was first up for Fossil.  Keeper Luis Nunez was all over the spot kick, but was unlucky as it deflected high and just inside the crossbar.  Lamar confidently answered on their first kick.  After both sides scored their second kicks Fossil Ridge's Patrick Nuss saw his shot saved easily by Nunez.  Lamar squandered the huge opportunity though by missing their kick off the post.

The misses just kept coming though as Fossil launched their fourth high over the crossbar.  This time Lamar cashed in to take the lead to the fifth  round.   Anthony Powell had his kick saved by Luis Munoz and Arlington Martin were on their way to the next round of the playoffs.
