Late penalty lifts Byron Nelson past Keller Central

Tuesday brought us round one of the District 5-6A clash between defending champs and current leaders Byron Nelson and top challengers Keller Central.  A huge early matchup to establish district supremacy for 2016.  Byron Nelson is off to their typical hot start and are threatening to run away from the rest of the league.  Central needed a win on home turf to reel the leaders back in while a BNHS win would open a considerable gap at the top.

The two teams went back and forth over the opening twenty minutes of play as both teams went close on a couple of set pieces.  Soon after the home side would jump in front as Calum Sutherland flicked a cross to the back post where Trenton Magryta was waiting. The only Byron Nelson defender dove in and missed leaving Magryta to easily poke past the flailing keeper for the 1-0 lead.  The celebration was short-lived though.

BNHS went straight to the other end after the restart forcing a smart save from Josh Starkey in the Central net.  The defense couldn't take care of the ensuing corner kick though as Mason Shank whipped in a swerving ball that found the back side netting. All even in just a minute.

The rest of the opening half was a series of long throw ins and set pieces.  Several half chances but nobody was able to keep the match from going 1-1 to the break.

The second half was a much quieter affair as the two defenses took center stage and the set pieces were in shorter supply than in the opening frame.  BNHS generated a couple of solid opportunities, but Starkey was there to slam the door shut each time. Gabe Segovia began to push his influence on the match in the final fifteen minutes.

First he rifled a low shot from distance that flashed just past the left post and then with only six minutes to play he got loose once again driving at speed straight through the Central midfield.  Segovia let loose from twenty and narrowly missed wide left. It was pretty much one way traffic as the visitors were pushing for the victory.

Just as the game was looking to be headed to a shootout the deciding sequence took place.  Central got numbers forward and looked to have gotten Evan Ripic in on the right wing.  His low cross was certainly to be scored, but the referee called offside.  A questionable call in the dual system where the referee was a solid 8 yards out of position to make the call.  Truthfully, not sure if it was a correct call or not, but hard to make that call from the position he was in.

While several CFC players protested Byron Nelson got the ball right back in play and went to the other end.  A nice ball behind the Central defense sprung Segovia who was pulled down in the box for a penalty.  Mason Shank put home the spot kick and Byron Nelson had a huge win.  The three points give Byron Nelson a commanding lead in District 5-6A.
