Las Vegas SA knocks off Solar Red in Dallas Cup U15 semifinal

Friday provided an interesting semifinal battle on Richland College field 5.  Battle tested and nationally known Solar Chelsea taking the field against Dallas Cup cinderellas Las Vegas Sports Academy.  LVSA has taken the U15 tournament by storm coming out of nowhere to earn a well deserved semifinal berth.

Both teams had their moments in the opening forty minutes of play.  Las Vegas got the better of the early exchanges and looked particularly better than Solar on set pieces.

In the 6th minute a LVSA 25 yard effort looked destined for the opening goal,  but it came back off the inside of the crossbar and stayed out of the net.  Later in the half they executed a perfect corner kick as the ball fell to the back post where a player fired at the open net.  Keeper Edgar Davilla was nowhere to be found but a defender was on the line to deflect the low shot away.

Solar produced some nice attacking soccer as well.  Jackson Joy whistled a long range effort just wide in the 15th minute.   The best chance of the half fell to Mandela Steward who got on a rebound from keeper Phillip Starcher.  He cut inside and fired from ten yards.  The shot beat Starcher but was blocked on the goal line.

Scoreless to the break, but both sides look to have a goal in them.

Solar started brightly after the restart with Jack Woods getting loose down the middle.  After a long run he fired a rocket from the 18.  Las Vegas keeper Phillip Starcher was up to the task turning the shot away.  Moments later Mandel Steward curled a shot just inches over the crossbar.  LVSA better wake up or they'll be heading home.

Las Vegas slowly started to work themselves back into the game.   Solar keeper Edgar Davilla was called into action twice.  The first time he stoned Jose Verduga and shortly after he made a smart save on Agustin Hernandez.

That brought Solar coach Nuno Passos off the bench as he spent the next two minutes yelling like a wild man.  Not sure what it accomplished other than to belittle a couple of his players in front of the crowd.

Fifteen minutes to play and still scoreless.

Then came the fateful moment.  Maliq Cooper of Las Vegas curled in a low cross from the right side.  Solar's Daniel Lopez was perfectly positioned, but somehow completely whiffed on the clearance.  The ball squirted thru to the back post where Agustin Hernandez was waiting for the easy finish.  1-0 Las Vegas and action time for Solar Chelsea.

With two minutes to play and Solar throwing numbers forward a LVSA long ball released Marco Gonzalez-Pineda who raced into the penalty area where he was brought down for a penalty kick.  He calmly converted the spot kick and Las Vegas were heading to Saturday's final at the Cotton Bowl.

LVSA will have their work cut out for them in the final as they will face powerful Tigres who knocked off Eintracht Frankfurt in the other semifinal and have a long tradition of winning Dallas Cup titles.
