Mansfield slipped past Hebron in a wild affair Tuesday night to earn a berth in the Region I 5A tournament in Midland this coming weekend.  A goal in the 79th minute from Matthew Buckwalter broke the 2-2 tie.

It was a crazy first half in which both teams scored a pair of goals.  Hebron jumped out to an early lead when the Mansfield defense failed to deal with a long ball and Omar Lopez tucked the ball away for the lead.  Mansfield would answer right back though.

A turnover in the Hebron defense left the ball with Michael Greenfield who slid a pass to Trevor Kistler to tie the match at 1-1.  The Tigers would push in front just a minute later as a long throw in was flicked on by Buckwalter to the backpost where Ben Bennett headed home.

Hebron looked good in the attack all night long though and they tied the game before halftime as a low cross from Joel Carlos was turned home by Connor Richmond.  Hebron almost scored again just before the break but Lopez was turned away by a great save from Mansfield keeper Kenny Barbaran.  The match went to the break 2-2.

The second half was just as open as the first, but neither side were able to find the net.  Hebron had several chances only to see all of them turned away by Barbaran.  It looked like the game was headed to overtime until Mansfield earned a freekick near midfield with a little over a minute to play.

Cooper Whitfield lofted the freekick long into the penalty box.  The Hebron keeper was rooted on his line and failed to come handle the ball.  Instead Mansfield's Matthew Buckwalter raced in and headed home from 5 yards out for the go-ahead goal and when Hebron's Chaz Washington flashed a header wide at the buzzer Mansfield had their win.

Mansfield advances to the Regional Tournament in Midland on Friday to play either El Paso Socorro or El Paso Americas.
