Dallas Cup - Manchester United rallies to tie Tigres 2-2

There’s not much better than opening night at Dallas Cup. This year soccer fans were treated to Manchester United facing off against Mexico powers Tigres. Talk about a fun matchup with two teams with polar opposite styles of play.

After 15 minutes of feeling each other out, the first big chance fell to Tigres as they broke in down the right side. A blistering shot from Alex Hurtado was turned away by Manchester United keeper Matej Kovar, but the rebound was left sitting in the middle of the six. Luckily, George Tanner swooped in and cleared the ball to safety.

Shortly thereafter Kovar was called into action again, this time hanging onto a low drive. Manchester United went to the other end and had a nice cross blocked away for a corner. The game finally burst to life as Aiden Barlow had his curling shot pushed wide for a corner by Tigres keeper Sebastian Ulloa.

Despite the pressure it would be Tigres who grabbed the lead in the 30th minute off a corner kick. None of the ManU defenders dealt with the ball and it whizzed through the six to the back post where Aldo Mota raced in to put the ball home.

From there Tigres controlled play almost playing keep ball from their English opponents.  Manchester United squandered a late set piece opportunity and the game went to halftime Tigres 1 Manchester United 0

Tigres looked to double their lead after the break but Aldo Mota’s free kick from 30 yards whizzed just over the crossbar. ManU needed to get going or this match was going to slip away. Shortly after they got their best chance of the night as a low cross found Tahith Chong right in front of goal. He met the cross spot on but his shot flew just wide of the post as the Manchester fans groaned.

Tigres got their breathing room in the 74th minute as Jesus Garza got deep into the penalty area before slipping the ball past the onrushing Kovar. The ball was going to roll wide but Manchester United defender Brandon Williams slid in at the last moment and put the ball into his own net. ManU would answer back immediately as Mason Greenwood put away a nice pass and the game was right back on!

The game was almost tied in the 82nd as a Tigres turnover in the back gifted ManU a golden chance. Tigres keeper Sebastian Ulloa stood tall though and turned away the blistering shot. It was only a matter of time though. James Garner lashed home the tying goal with only 3 minutes to play.

The game would end 2-2 as Manchester United rallied from a two goal deficit. A highly entertaining match at the Cotton Bowl as Super Group play gets underway! Both these sides look capable of making a nice run this week.
