Marcus (15-5-4) opened the scoring in the sixth minute when forward Darin Kruzich slipped behind the Carroll defense. Carroll (22-0-3) responded with a rocket from Matt Leach in the 25th minute.
The Dragons took a 2-1 lead with 3:45 remaining in the half. Carroll's Sean Chapman launched a throw-in into the penalty area from the right flank. Senior midfielder Hunter Horvath flicked In the cross with his head for the goal. The lead was short-lived.
The second half saw both teams produce chances, but by the 55th minute the game opened up into an end-to-end affair. The pace seemed to favor the speedy Marauders rather than the technical Dragons. Marcus created the better opportunities, especially down the right flank, but couldn't capitalize.
Marcus forward Caleb Richardson brought speed that surpassed the Dragons' defenders. In fact, the Marauders' speed throughout the attacking third posed problems for Southlake. Richardson drew a foul atop the penalty area, and the Marauders converted the restart for the 2-2 tie with 2:18 remaining in the half.
With the score tied 2-2 after regulation, Carroll converted its first two shootout attempts with goals from Mac McGuire and Matt Leach.
Southlake keeper Oshick Shams sealed the deal by forcing one attempt wide and securing three saves for the victory.
"I love the pressure. I love having the game on my back," Shams said. "I just love it. I just go out and I know what I'm going to do and I do it."
