The Arlington Martin girls soccer team put on a dominating display Tuesday night as they beat Mansfield 2-0 and earned a spot at the Region I tournament this weekend. It will be their first regional appearance since 1998. Martin opened with the wind at their backs and came out intent on bossing the game. Stephanie Anasi drove into the penalty area trying to move past three Mansfield defenders. She was dropped for an obvious foul earning a penalty kick. Tasha Anasi calmly knocked the spot kick home and Martin were on their way. The 2nd goal came just before halftime when Megan Thomas fired a rocket into the top corner from just outside the penalty area. It was a demoralizing goal for Mansfield who had been defending in numbers trying to get to the half only down a goal. The two goals lead gave Martin confidence in the 2nd half even though they were facing into the wind. Martin was able to keep the ball on the turf and hold some possession keeping the Mansfield attack at bay. Mansfield was never able to find the goal to get back into the game and Martin ended winners 2-0. After the game Arlington Martin coach Ruth Knight said, "I'm just excited about it, excited about it. It's a new experience for them but we hope to take them all the way to state."
