Fulham blast FC Dallas to open Dallas Cup XXXV

It was not your typical Dallas day as Sunday arrived.  It perfectly fit Fulham's taste though wit chilly rain falling at the Cotton Bowl as the English boys set about defending their Dallas Cup title.

It didn't take long for the class of Fulham's Moussa Dembele to shine through as in the 12th minute he scored a smart goal.  A low pass came to his feet from Lyle Della Verde with Dembele having a nice one touch turn with the ball to separate himself from the defender.  From there Dembele curled a perfectly placed shot into the net with his left foot.

The difference in class was evident as the EPL youth champions were on another level from their American academy opponents.   Dembele almost doubled the lead in the 22nd as he headed over from a corner kick.

A pivotal play happened in the 28th minute as a Fulham through ball sent Dembele in behind the FCD defense. The  Dallas keeper Jose Gonzalez raced out to meet Dembele and was going to get to the ball first but defender Vernon Bailey intervened at the last second deflecting the ball past the sliding goaltender.

Moussa Dembele and Bailey raced into the penalty area after the loose ball.  Dembele got their first and Bailey dragged him down for a clear penalty kick.  Bailey could have seen red, but the official let him off the hook with only a yellow.  Dembele calmly tucked away the penalty for the deserved 2-0 lead.

A misplay by the Dallas keeper Gonzalez led to another penalty kick just before halftime.  A perfect pass from 10 in behind the defense put Emerson Hyndman away.  The keeper raced out and completely missed the bouncing ball leaving Hyndman to run around him towards the ball and empty net.  Gonzalez pulled him down to prevent he goal.  Another lucky break as he only saw yellow.

Moussa Dembele stepped up for the spot kick in an attempt to complete his first half hat trick.  As the referee blew his whistle Dembele approached slowly.  The keeper went to ground and Dembele responded with a deft flick that floated ever so slowly over the helpless keeper and into the net.  After 45 minutes it was clear that Moussa Dembele belongs on a bigger stage than Dallas Cup.

The second half opened just the same.  FC Dallas brought on a pair of subs at the break, but it was still Fulham dictating the flow almost scoring on two separate attacks within the first five minutes.  Both sides substituted freely and the game got quite chippy and choppy from there.  Several yellow cards were shown and FC Dallas started getting more of the ball.  The Fulham defense stood strong though.

With ten minutes left Fulham made it 4-0 when Joshua Smile rifled home a strike from just outside the penalty area.  FC Dallas had a monster chance to avoid the shutout in the 82nd as they earned a free kick from twenty yards out.  After a short touch Aaron Meyer hit his shot into the Fulham wall though.

In the end Fulham looked the part of the defending champs and with Moussa Dembele they look a real threat to repeat this year.
