Irving Nimitz clinches District Title with win over Colleyville Heritage

Friday brought the monster matchup in District 6-5A as Colleyville Heritage travelled to Irving Nimitz in a battle for the district lead.  Irving Nimitz sat in the drivers seat thanks the the shocking upset of the prior week where Grapevine defeated Heritage. That left Nimitz with a three point lead in the district standings.  A Nimitz win tonight and they would clinch the 6-5A title.  Colleyville had everything to play for though as well.  A Colleyville win would bring them even with Nimitz and also give them the tiebreaker.

Heritage created the first decent chance of the match as they launched a sixty yard freekick into the Nimitz penalty box.  The defense failed to deal with the long ball and Matt Watson found himself right in front with a clean header.  Unfortunately, Watson flicked the ball wide from close range.  It would be the first of many chances gone wrong for the visitors.

After the close call Irving went straight to the other end and had a penalty appeal turned down as a cross struck a Heritage defender in the arm.  The non-call was probably a good one though as you don't really want to give a soft penalty so early in the game.

Colleyville were turning up the pressure midway thru the half earning three corner kicks in quick succession.  On the third they should have scored but Matt Watson saw his header come back off the crossbar.  Scoreless at the twenty minute mark.  Two great chances from Watson, nothing to show for it.  Heritage might come to rue those misses later on.

In the 24th minute, another corner and another Heritage chance.   Once again they stood hands on heads as the Miguel Tierrafria header missed wide.  They would pay for the misses.

Sure enough only a minute later Nimitz had the lead leaving Colleyville shaking their heads.  Kevin Garcia got on the end of a long ball finding himself one v one with the last defender.  He cut left and fired a perfect shot past Adam Gaudet and into the back side netting.  1-0 Nimitz against the run of play.

Nimitz were having massive problems dealing with the Colleyville set pieces as another deflected corner looped inches over the home side's crossbar.  This one issue alone will keep a deep Nimitz playoff run from happening.  Seven Heritage corners in the opening half and Colleyville really should have scored at least three of them.

Another set piece and another good scoring chance for Heritage moments later.  Ryan Jakzsta  launched a long, floating ball that looked destined for the net, but at the last second keeper Alex Amaya deflected the ball off the crossbar.

The last chance of the half again fell to the visitors as a mistake from Amaya gave Heritage an indirect freekick twelve yards out straight away.  After a quick touch Miguel Tierrafia rifled the all into the top corner to even the match at 1-1. Finally Colleyville Heritage cashed in a set piece.

Irving Nimitz had the wind to start the second half and put together a few minutes of solid attack together.  And then....guess what?  Another Colleyville freekick.  Once again Ryan Jakzsta launched a sixty yard bomb into the penalty box and once again Nimitz failed to deal with it.  The loose ball fell to the feet of Ammar Nazarali who blasted it home.

Heritage had a deserved lead.  Now could they hold onto it?

Nimitz went right about getting the goal back and produced a great chance.  Preston Hillis made a great move and dribbled down the end line deep into the Heritage box before cutting the ball back across the six.  The pass took a deflection and went right into the waiting arms of Colleyville keeper Adam Gaudet.  Nimitz looked like they had another goal in them though.

Sure enough only a minute later the match was tied as a long cross was headed home.  Twenty minutes to play and everything to play for.

With ten minutes left Nimitz broke through to take the lead.  A well executed freekick of their own created the chance.  Kevin Garcia laid a ball through to Roman Cano whose shot clanged off the crossbar.  Heritage cleared, but Nimitz put the ball right back to the back post where was Cano was waiting.  Instead of shooting he squared the ball past Gaudet to Jason Alfaro who tapped into the empty net from close range.

Irving Nimitz closed out the final minutes from there for the 3-2 victory.  With the win Nimitz clinches the District 6-5A title with two matches to play.  Barring a collapse, Colleyville Heritage will take the second playoff spot from the district.
