Irving Nimitz outclasses Trinity

Trinity were the hosts for an important early season soccer clash in District 6-5A as they welcomed Irving Nimitz to Pennington Field Tuesday night.  Nimitz are the defending district champions and have a win and draw in their opening two district games.  Trinity were looking to throw their names into the district race by taking out one of the favorites.

The opening ten minutes were quiet as both sides felt the other out.  Eventually the midfield duo of Kevin Garcia and Preston Hillis began to get on the ball more each producing a shot and tilting the field in favor of Irving Nimitz.

The first goal of the game came in the 15th minute of play when Nimitz ran a short corner.  They didn't execute the initial play, but the ball came back out to Kevin Garcia who curled a wonderful low cross in behind the Trinity defense that had pushed out.  Nimitz's Alexander Egeonu got there first forcing a smart save from Trojan keeper Ian Reyes.  However, the rebound popped high in the air where Jayson Alfaro was there to head home from close range putting the visitors in front.

Nimitz kept the pressure on from there as Martin Gamboa whistled just wide in the 22nd minute.  The visitors were looking like defending district champs as Trinity were hard pressed to get down the field, much less pressure the Nimitz goal.

Yet the Trojan defense was holding strong behind Dylan Yu and Scotty Welch. Just how long could they hold out though against the Nimitz quality?

The answer was not for long.  Once again it was another perfect diagonal ball from the midfield that split open the Trinity defense.  Francisco Rios played across from forty yards out that split the Trojan center backs.  Right midfielder Ismael Ibanez raced inside and took a couple of touches before sliding the ball past Ian Reyes and into the Trinity net. 2-0 Nimitz with six minutes remaining in the opening half.  It was almost 3-0 minutes later, but Reyes was able to tip a screamer from Roman Cano just around the post.

The second half opened just like the first as the visitors stayed on the front foot pushing for the third goal.  The first twenty minutes went scoreless as Nimitz attacked but were unable to find the net.  Through sixty minutes Trinity had still not even managed a shot at the Nimitz goal.

Meanwhile, Ian Reyes was a busy man in the Trinity net fending off multiple Irving Nimitz attacks.  He made a wonderful diving save in the 67th minute off a deflected shot from Preston Hillis.  Finally, Nimitz got their deserved third goal as Kevin Garcia got down the left side and pulled a ball back across goal.  A Trinity defender failed to deal with the low cross leaving Walker Sorto to blast home from six yards out.  It got even worse for the home side as Kevin Garcia made it 4-0 with 14 seconds left in the match.

In the end it was just two teams on different levels.  Irving Nimitz are legitimate contenders for their second straight District 6-5A title while Trinity look to be in a group that will fight it out for the 4th playoff spot from the district.
