PDL - Laredo downs DFW Tornados in Season Operner

It took 77 minutes on an uncharacteristic cool and pleasant evening in Laredo for the boisterous home crowd of 1,104 to explode at the TAMIU Soccer Complex but the Heat finally put the ball into the back of the net off the foot of 17 yr old forward Felix Garcia.    Garcia’s beautiful drop shot over Tornado keeper Brian Sarber was set up by a deft pass from Carlos Ordaz and was all the home team needed versus a scrappy and determined DFW Tornado (0–1–0 / 0 Points) squad. Garcia’s goal gave the Heat a 1–0 lead that they would not relinquish for the remaining 13 minutes.

The Heat outshot the visiting DFW Tornados by a margin of 15 to 9; however, it was Heat goalkeeper Ryan Cooper that once again came up huge for the home side and saved a shot off a sweet pass from the right side by the Tornados that would have tied the game up.

“What can I say, the team played tough, DFW showed up to play and our defense continues to deny opponents scoring opportunities but most importantly, Cooper has had three monster games for us and tonight was no exception,” said Heat General Manager J.J. Vela.

Vela added, “While Cooper and the defense have played well, we need to start putting the ball into the goal at every opportunity we get. We cannot continue to rely on Ordaz and the rest of the defensive crew to continue to bail us out in these close games. The opportunities are there for us to score and we need to give the defense some breathing room by scoring when these opportunities present themselves.”

Vela concluded, “At the end of the day, a win is a win and we are happy for the three points the victory gave us; however, it is very clear to us after three league games, that our division opponents are very talented, not to mention loaded with gifted athletes, and that they are as hungry as we are to win the Mid-South Division title.”

Next up for the Heat is a home game versus the Austin Aztex, the last of four Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Qualifying Matches, on Friday, May 23rd at 8:00 PM but before playing Laredo, the Aztex will need to take on the DFW Tornados in Round Rock tomorrow Saturday, May 17th.

Elsewhere in the Mid-South Division.  The El Paso Patriots got their first victory of the season today with a 2–0 win over the expansion Houston Leones. These two clubs will play again on Saturday to finish up their back-to-back weekend matches. The Mississippi Brilla will be hosting the Baton Rouge Capitals in Clinton, MS as well on Saturday.
