Plano had no trouble with Arlington Martin in a Region I 5A semifinal running out comfortable 3-0 winners. Plano senior forward Patrick O'Day scored three times, including twice in the first seven minutes and the match was never in doubt.
"It took the other team out and boosted us," said O'Day, who has eight goals in the playoffs. "You can't do anything better than score two goals in the first 10 minutes."
It was a disappointing finish to an otherwise promising season for Martin (23-3-2), which won its district championship and defeated Odessa (5-2), El Paso Montwood (3-1) and North Crowley (3-2) to reach the regional tournament.
"At the end of the day they were probably the better team," Martin coach Cory Elolf said. "We talked about getting off to a good start and they came out and hammered us the first 10 minutes. It was hard. We were trying to scramble to get a goal and it just never happened."
Plano (20-2-3) took less than three minutes to showcase its quick-strike potential. It started when Wildcats midfielder Mark Santibanez nearly bent the ball into the left post only to have it stopped by Martin goalie Colten Grindstaff.
Grindstaff, though, couldn't corral the save and the ball trickled untouched along the goal line. That allowed Plano's Travis White to hustle over and pass the ball off to O'Day, who finished the job for his first goal at the 37:15 mark. O'Day was at it again less than five minutes later when he broke free behind Martin's defense after a pass from Santibanez and chipped in his second goal to the upper left corner.
"We were basically playing catch up and that is a hard thing to do against a team like that," Elolf said. "They don't give up a lot of goals. They are here for a reason."
Patrick O'Day finished his hat trick at the 29:16 mark of the second when he collected a pass from Santibanez and beat Grindstaff one-on-one.
