Mesquite Poteet boys get late goal to beat Legacy

The Mansfield Legacy boys fell to Mesquite Poteet in the Class 4A state soccer semifinals Friday afternoon in Georgetown on a late goal.   Legacy had the better run of play most of the match, but as we all know the best team doesn't always win in the game of soccer.

As the match wound down and appeared to be headed toward overtime, Poteet’s Mitchell Davis battled a Legacy defender for the ball inside the Broncos’ penalty area. Both players struck the ball simultaneously, causing it to spin in a wild arc into the far side of the Legacy goal.  Legacy pushed forward seeking the equalizer and came so close as they hit the crossbar with 2:30 remaining.

The Broncos (22-8-2) capped the deepest run in the Mansfield schools’ soccer history by reaching the semifinals.

"I thought Legacy was a great club and our kids just grinded it out," Poteet coach Casey Osborn said. "I thought Mansfield Legacy kind of took it to us for about 50-55 minutes. We kind of adjusted and put more players in the midfield so we could play out of the back and I think that kind of shifted it toward our side the last 25 minutes of the match."
