Andromeda rallies for Dallas Cup win over CF Monterrey

Andromeda took advantage of a strong wind at their back in the 2nd half to rally for a dramatic 2-1 win over CF Monterrey in Dallas Cup XXX Monday afternoon.  It was a cool and very windy afternoon at Richland College as both squads badly needed a win to stay in the running to advance to Friday's semifinals.

CF Monterrey had the 30 mph wind at their backs in the first half and Andromeda bunkered in for a long fight.   CF Monterrey created several chances, but Andromeda's defense stood strong.  Grant Van De Casteele and goalkeeper Will Davis made several nice plays during the half, but CF Monterrey finally broke through.  A swerving corner kick curled through traffic and found the net for a 1-0 Monterrey halftime lead.

Most thought at halftime that one goal would not be enough for CF Monterrey.  Andromeda introduced Alexei Reyes to the match at forward and Andromeda set about the business of getting to the attack with the wind at their backs.

Captain Dillon Powers led the way and finally evened the game after he picked up the ball on the left side and cut inside.  He reached the top of the box and fired a low shot into the lower left of the net to tie the game at 1-1.  Andromeda continued to pile on the pressure winning several corner kicks.  Finally one paid off as Alexei Reyes flighted a corner into the box where it was played out by the Monterrey defense.  Reyes picked the ball up out wide and rifled a cross into the crowded box where it went through everyone and into the net.

Andromeda would weather a couple of Monterrey attacks in the closing minutes, but held on 2-1.  The win puts Andromeda to 4 points trailing group leaders Vancouver on 6.  The two meet Wednesday for the group title and a spot in the Dallas Cup XXX semifinals.
