FC Dallas lose starters Harris and McCarty in expansion draft

FC Dallas midfielder Dax McCarty and forward Atiba Harris were taken in the first five picks of the MLS Expansion Draft.  McCarty was chosen by the Portland Timbers with the first overall pick, and Harris was selected with the fourth pick by the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Immediately after McCarty’s selection, Dallas protected 2010 team captain Daniel Hernandez. FCD was off the board after the Harris selection, as teams could only have two players maximum taken in the expansion draft.   McCarty was the talk of MLS when his name was released as a player available for selection, and most had predicted he would be taken with the first pick.

“Dax McCarty is a player that’s very practical for either of these teams,” said MLSsoccer.com’s Greg Lalas during the live broadcast of the expansion draft. “He’s 23, he’ll be great for you for 10 years.”

Both McCarty and Harris were on the field as part of the FC Dallas Starting XI in Sunday’s MLS Cup loss to the Colorado Rapids. Anthony Wallace, selected with the seventh pick by Portland, was also a member of FC Dallas in the 2010 season before being traded to the Rapids in midseason. Wallace started for Colorado in Sunday's finale.

After the draft Dax McCarty was then traded from Portland to DC United for Rodney Wallace and a 4th round draft pick.
