Marcus girls defeat Southlake in shootout

The Southlake girls looked to be on their way to the Regional Tournament as they led Marcus 1-0 with the clock ticking down.  Then the unthinkable happened.  With only a minute to play Marcus tied the match as Katelyn Mountjoy scored in dramatic fashion finding the low far corner on her shot.

Things had looked so good for Southlake.  They had taken the lead in the opening minutes.  Sophie Groff took the ball down the right flank and crossed it perfectly into the box, as Meghan Murphy rose above the Marcus defender and headed the ball into the net.  Southlake had held the lead the entire match, but Marcus would not give in.

The two teams battled through two scoreless overtime periods and the match would have to be decided in shoutout.  Goalies Meg Smith of Marcus and Sonja Loy of Carroll were each fantastic in the shootout, but sixth shooter Baylee Mitchell gave Marcus the winning margin.

"[Mitchell] was further down the list [of shooters]," Marcus coach Chad Hobbs said. "I talked to her and another girl and said, 'Who's got the confidence?' and she said, 'I'll do it.' And she stepped up and scored that big goal in sudden death."

Marcus now advances to the Regional Tournament to face Arlington on Friday in Midland.  Arlington dominated Midland 3-0 last night to advance.
