Seattle kills FC Dallas playoff hopes

What was once a glimmer of hope is no more.  The slim FC Dallas playoff chance is gone thanks to a very good Seattle Sounders squad.  On a night when FC Dallas had everything to play for, Seattle was just simply better.

Injuries killed the first half of the season leaving FCD on a historic winless streak.  Once the troops got reasonably healthy the gap was just too big to close and the Sounders put 2012 to rest Sunday night in front of a typically wonderful Seattle soccer crowd.

FC Dallas was still missing Brek Shea for the match, but it did not stop Dallas from playing their typical wide open attacking style.  Seattle is just the wrong team to do that against.  The lack of discipline and shape was evident all night long as Dallas tried to get the Sounders to play the FCD wild soccer.

Seattle kept enough discipline to expose Dallas on several occasions, while Dallas gave up numbers regularly.  In the 32nd minute the home side would jump ahead.  Fredy Montero was dragged down by Hernan Peruz.  Brad Evans put the penalty kick away and Seattle were in front.

A breakdown on a set piece just before halftime would give Dallas hope though.  A longball to the backpost was nodded on to an unmarked Blas Perez who fired home from close range.  The match went to the break all even.

The second half belonged to Seattle though as they flowed forward in numbers.  Dallas needed goals, but it was the Sounders who found the net.  Mauro Rosales and Fredy Montero dominated the pitch.  Brad Evans and Rosales netted the decisive goals in the final 45 minutes as Dallas became increasingly desparate.

With the win Seattle clinch no worse than a 3rd place finish in the MLS Western Conference   FC Dallas on the other hand can start planning their golf outings and look towards next season.
