Garcia goal lifts Keller Central to victory

Keller Central arrived for game two of the Winter Blast Tournament looking to build upon the prior night's 2-1 victory over Odessa High School.  Meanwhile, El Paso Riverside battled to a 1-1 draw with Southlake Thursday night and were on the hunt for their opening win of the 2015 season.

Two very different styles were on display right from the start as Riverside were quite comfortable with the short, quick passing game.  Knocking it around and looking to get into the attack.  Central, on the other hand, is a quick strike offense looking to get the ball in to their three pronged attack of Sean Garcia, Fabian Linares and Evan Ripic.  Which style would win out in the cold and windy conditions?

With twenty minutes gone neither team had come anywhere close to creating a legitimate scoring chance and the game remained scoreless.  Finally in the 35th minute we had a good attack as a Linares long ball found Garcia in behind the Riverside defense.  He cut the ball back on the volley for the onrushing Ishai Cortez who couldn't get a clean strike and rolled it wide.

Scoreless to the break.

Keller Central opened the second half in a better attacking mood as Garcia and Linares were looking particularly dangerous.  Was there a goal coming?  Riverside were starting to get a bit stretched at the back and losing some defensive discipline as the half progressed.

This match was destined for a scoreless draw until one bit of magic in the dying moments.  A flick over the top sprung Sean Garcia in behind the Riverside defense.  He raced to the top to the penalty box and fired just as two El Paso defenders arrived on the scene.  The shot was perfect though as it found the top right corner of the net for the victory.

The dramatic win gives Central a perfect start to the young season and sets up a showdown with neighbors Southlake to clinch the group.
