South Grand Prairie rolls to tournament title in Temple

The South Grand Prairie Warriors boys soccer team looks destined for a big year in 2015.  Loaded with talent the team traveled down to Temple to play in the Kickoff Classic last Thursday and chase that tournament championship.  They had opened the season last Monday with a solid 2-0 victory over Trinity High School.  Could they keep the momentum going in Temple?

The simple answer was heck yeah.  Bryan High School was up first to open group play at the tourney and offered little resistance as SGP bossed the match in a comfortable 4-0 victory.  Oliver Callado and Victor Alvarado notched two goals each in the victory.

A much tougher opponent awaited in the second group game in a quality squad from Waco Midway.  It was a tight match from the start and looked headed for a scoreless draw until the final minutes when Yishai Valdez scored the winner.  A big win that would propel the boys deeper into the tournament and towards the title.

SGP needed a win over Bastrop to clinch their place in the Final and the team came out on a mission.  Oliver Callado put the team on his back and got SGP off to the dream start as he found the net twice in the opening 13 minutes.  Bastrop was dead and buried from there as the Warriors ran out easy 4-1 winners.

Killeen Harker Heights waited in the final and put up a strong fight.  The game was all even when Angel Hernandez let loose with a bomb.  Hernandez broke a 1-1 tie with a ridiculous long range shot that found the top corner of the net leaving the sprawling Killeen keeper with no chance.  A shot truly worthy of the winner in a championship match.  Edgar Aguayo put the icing on the cake making it 3-1 and the Warriors were on their way to the title.

The impressive tournament showing moves SGP to a perfect 4-0 on the young season.  Next up the Warriors will play in the ten team Martin Invitational starting on Thursday in Arlington.  SGP will open against Mesquite Horn Thursday before facing Dallas Sunset on Friday. Host Arlington Martin awaits on Saturday.  Martin won two and lost one at the Winter Blast Tournament this past weekend.
