Byron Nelson made the trip south to face off against Keller Fossil Ridge Tuesday night in the final matchday of the opening round of District 5-6A matches.  This would mark the halfway point of district play and Byron Nelson were intent on finishing it on top of the league.  Fossil Ridge were looking to put several hard luck losses in the rearview mirror and claim a major scalp in the process.

The game started fairly slowly but livened up after 15 minutes.  In the 18th minute both teams created chances.  Fossil Ridge's DJ Trutza unleashed a low shot that forced Byron keeper Chase Therrien into a low save.  The ball went the other way and Byron generated a low shot that Fossil keeper AJ Acuna held.

Byron Nelson would keep the pressure on as a perfect corner kick from Junior Vazquez found Tyler Kibbel all alone in the penalty area.  His header went straight to Acuna though and the game remained scoreless.  That would change though.

In the 25th minute the visitors would get on the board in grand fashion.  After partially clearing a long throw in the ball fell to Joseph Morin who unleashed a left footed volley from a good 30 yards out.  It was a screamer that left Acuna no chance as it zipped past.  A once in a lifetime strike!  1-0 to Byron Nelson.

The home side nearly tied it up in the 31st as a turnover in the back allowed DJ Trutza a chance at goal.  His low shot was turned aside by Therrien though and the match would go to the break 1-0.

Keller Fossil Ridge had a glorious chance in the 54th as a Patrick Nuss long ball released Noah Powell who curled in a shot to the back post.  DJ Trutza came sliding in at the last moment to deflect the ball on frame, but once against Therrien was up to the task barely tipping it over the crossbar.

Byron Nelson took control from there as Keller Fossil Ridge rarely were able to break through the Bobcat midfield.  Tyler Kibbel almost put the game away in the 74th as he whizzed a shot past the right post.

The last chance of the night fell to Fossil as they earned a throw in deep in Bobcat territory while the clock ticked down.  Everyone came forward as the ball was thrown into the penalty area.  Patrick Nuss flicked the header on and Byron Nelson were forced into a couple of last gasp saves as the clocked ticked to zero.

Not the greatest performance in the world from the defending state champions, but definitely three points earned and a victory that help them keep pace with Keller Central.  The two teams will end the opening half of district play tied atop the standings.
