Late Byron Nelson goal earns draw at Keller Central

This was the big one.  Both teams have had this one circled for weeks.  Byron Nelson was seeking revenge for their only district loss last month when Keller Central scored a penalty kick with no time left.  They were also looking to maintain their slim lead at the top of District 5-6A.

After a quiet opening to the game the first shot came in the 12th minute when Junior Vazquez fired just wide from twenty yards out.  The battle stayed pretty much in the midfield for the next minutes as the offenses were slow to get going.  Keller Central's first chance came in the 22nd minute as Michael Tengvall headed a Deanda corner kick wide.

Chances were starting to come as Evan Ripic earned a free kick in the 24th while making a darting run through the midfield.  Abraham Deanda curled a left footed strike from twenty five yards that Chase Thierren made a diving save on to keep the match scoreless.

With ten minutes to go in the opening half Byron Nelson launched a fifty yard free kick from midfield that landed in the Central goal, but keeper Josh Starkey was completely wiped out on the play.  An easy call from the referee to disallow the goal and give Central the free kick. The game would go scoreless to the break.  At least the soccer was a bit better than the last time these two met.  Who would find the winner in the second half?

The second half was livelier and the home team would jump in front in the 50th minute off a long throw in.  The long toss found Alex Kimmel at the near post who flicked his header backwards over Byron keeper Chase Thierren and into the net.  Gustavo Lopez was there to make sure, but the ball was already in the net.  1-0 to Keller Central.

Byron Nelson went right to work trying to get the match evened up piling on pressure over the next few minutes.  Josh Starkey and company were keeping the clean sheet though as we entered the final twenty minutes of play.

Central finally broke the pressure with an epic counter attack.  Gustavo Lopez got on the end of a Sean Garcia long ball weaving through a pair of defenders before laying off to Abe Deanda.  Abraham cut inside on his left foot before chipping a shot to the back post. Thierren watched helplessly as the ball looped over his head and bounced off the top of the crossbar and over.

Byron Nelson went right back on the attack as Central kept sitting deep.  Could the home defense hold out and give Keller Central the season sweep?  Byron should have tied the match in the 73rd minute as a long throw found the cutting Erick Suarez inside the six yard box.  The visiting fans groaned as the header went inches high.  Should have been the equalizer right there.

Two minutes later they got their just reward for all the pressure. Once again a long throw started all the action.  The ball was flicked to the middle where Central only got a half clearance to the top of the box where a low shot was fired on frame.  Erick Suarez was waiting to redirect the shot past Starkey and into the goal.  All even.

The final would be 1-1 with the result keeping Byron Nelson two points clear at the top of the district with only one match left to play.  All They will need is a draw at home against Fossil Ridge in their season finale.  Central stays in second place a single point ahead of hard charging Keller.
