District 5-6A Soccer Roundup at the halfway point

Published 2/23/2016 7:58:39 AM by staff from dallas

Half the District 5-6A season is in the books and once again Byron Nelson is leading the way with Denton Ryan and Keller Central in hot pursuit.  With seven matches left there is still plenty of time for playoff positioning as even 5th - 7th are still well in the hunt for a postseason berth.

The main thing we learned in the opening half of district play is that leaders Byron Nelson have just as stingy a defense as they did last year.  I don't think they are quite as talented overall as the 2015 team, but they have taken a stranglehold on 5-6A. The schedule is also favorable in the 2nd half of the season as challengers Denton Ryan and Keller Central both travel to BNHS.  The title is clearly their's to lose.

Denton Ryan have been the surprise of the district so far blasting out to a 2nd place finish with 5 wins 1 shootout loss and a regulation loss for 16 points.  They trail leaders Byron Nelson by 4 points and lead 3rd places Keller Central by 2 points.  Ryan will look to solidify their 2nd place standing as they host Keller Central tonight in a huge matchup.

Keller Central ended the opening half of district play in 3rd place.  They are going to face a struggle to move up in the 2nd half of the season as they must face both teams in front of them (Byron Nelson and Denton Ryan) on the road.  To move up they'll have to be road warriors otherwise I think they are safely no worse than 3rd at the end.

The real fight is going to be for the final playoff spot at 4th place.  Currently Keller holds the position on 11 points, but Keller Fossil Ridge, Timber Creek and Denton Guyer have ideas on the spot.  If any of the four teams can get hot and put together a run of results they could easily find themselves in the playoffs when all is said and done.  The only team looking dead and buried is Northwest who slumped to seven straight losses.  Anyone who drops points to Northwest will find themselves suffering in the standings in the 2nd half of district play.

So get your coats and blankets out for tonight as the 2nd half of district play kicks off.  The game of the night features a 2-3 matchup as Keller Central travels to face Denton Ryan.  Leaders Byron Nelson hit the road to play at Keller who'll look to pull the upset.  Another important match pits #6 Timber Creek against #7 Denton Guyer.  The loser of this match will find themselves on playoff life support.  Finally #5 Fossil Ridge will look to bank three important points in their game against laggards Northwest.
