Friday night brought one of the big matches in District 3-6A as Keller Central traveled a few miles to take on rivals Keller Fossil Ridge. Although we are still in the first half of the district season, this was a big one. Both teams are battling it out for 2nd place in the district with Fossil Ridge holding a slim two point leading heading into the match.  The two are trying to keep pace with Abilene who are threatening to run away and hide in the district race already holding a full two game lead in the standings.

It was a windy night on the hilltop at Keller Fossil Ridge and that wind would definitely have an influence on this match.  Central had the wind the opening half and would need to cash in on the advantage.

Fossil Ridge would strike first in lightning fashion. As the CFC defense stepped up a long ball caught them by surprise as a defender was slow to step and not in line with the rest of the defense. It allowed a Fossil striker to be onside and race in behind the visitors defense. Jonathan Hernandez outran the chasing defenders and calmly slotted past the helpless Josh Starkey in goal. 1-0 to Fossil Ridge right off the bat!

Central went to work to try to get the goal back and earned three corner kicks over the next few minutes. Alexei Gonzalez was able to get his head on the first two but not able to direct the ball on frame either time. The third CFC set piece was buried as Julian Bouchard volleyed home from close range. Ten minutes in and it was 1-1.

The game quieted down from there as both teams settled into the game. There were no chances at either end until the 31st minute of play when once again it was another CFC corner kick. Abe DeAnda put in a dangerous curling ball that was punched away by the Fossil keeper. The ball was immediately put back into the six where Alexei Gonzalez flicked a header into the net. The whistle immediately blew as Gonzalez was in an offside position. Correct call and the match remained even at one.

The final attack of the half fell to the home side as another long ball beat the CFC defense leaving Jonathan Hernandez to race in on goal for the second time in the match. The result was the same as the first with Hernandez slotting home for the 2-1 halftime lead. Big advantage to Fossil Ridge as they not only had the lead but also the wind after the break.

The second half opened just like the first ended as a ball easily got in behind the Central defense leaving Jonathan Hernandez to race in on Starkey for a third time of the night. He rounded Starkey but was forced wide enough by the challenge that he couldn't cut the shot back into the empty net.

The big shot of the game came in the 49th minute as Shaun Garcia found space and fired an absolutely perfect shot from 25 yards out that curled right into the top right corner of the net. As good a goal as you are going to see at this level. Keller Fossil Ridge in complete control up 3–1 with the wind and thirty minutes to play.

From there the Central kids lost composure as they began fouling and grabbing. The yellow cards came out and there were a couple of cheap fouls that could have been dealt with more harshly.

With 18 minutes left Central found life as a Mario Sheward left footed strike was saved but the rebound was left right in front of the net where the ball was poked home.  Game on at 3-2 now!  Just minutes later the game really should have been tied but the Central winger completely blew an easy finish as he whizzed his shot wide of the post.

Central kept pushing for the tying goal putting several dangerous balls into the Fossil area. Time was quickly running out though and Fossil Ridge saw out the victory grabbing a massive three points in the District 3-6A race. The win puts Keller Fossil Ridge solidly into 2nd place in the District behind Abilene who they play next week.
