Fort Worth Vaqueros grab 2nd win of season

The new look Fort Worth Vaqueros moved to a perfect 2-0 on the season with a convincing 3-0 victory over defending champions Houston Dutch Lions Saturday night. The Vaqueros are clearly on a better track this year after letting go of the previous coach and finally bringing in some better talent.  It looks like the team is finally going to live up to the talent level available here in soccer rich North Texas.

On Saturday night at historic Farrington Field in Fort Worth the Vaqueros wasted no time in showing their intent scoring inside the opening minute of play. Jesse Milrario shocked the visitors establishing the flow for the entire evening. The Vaqueros dominated the first half ball possession against the Dutch Lions and had several chances to extend the lead but after 45 minutes the score remained 1-0. Sometimes you can get in trouble by not extending a lead and letting an opponent hang around.

It was not going to go that way though as Fort Worth closed the door to any comeback early on after the break.  Jamie Lovegrove converted a penalty kick and Marko Ortiz provided the final 3-0 scoreline in the 76th minute.  An impressive early season win that throws the team right into the talk about a division title.  Plenty to do still of course, but I think the quality just might be there.

“I thought the boys did really well when we pressured,” said coach Nick Stavrou. “We seemed to cause them some problems and created opportunities.”

They'll look to keep the hot start going midweek. The next game for Vaqueros will be on the road against Shreveport Rafters on Wednesday May 24.
