FC Dallas claims nice home win over Chivas USA

Three games into the 2014 MLS season and new boss Oscar Pareja has to be happy with how his FC Dallas squad is performing.  Seven points from three matches and the top spot in the MLS Western Conference.  Two nice home wins and a quality point on the road at defending MLS champions Sporting KC.  Not bad at all.

The latest win came on Saturday night as FCD welcomed a resurgent Chivas USA to town.  The first half ended scoreless despite several quality attacks from the home side.  Fabian Castillo was wonderful running at the Chivas USA defense.  He even popped up inside a few times as he and Mauro Diaz switched back and forth.

It was a half of missed opportunities though.  Blas Perez had a free header from a corner kick saved by Chivas keeper Dan Kennedy.  Another Castill cross found Je-Vaughn Watson all alone on the backpost, but Watson blazed his volley high over the crossbar from close range.  The second half would be much better though.

After the game had turned quite physical, FC Dallas finally broke through and it led to a flurry of four goals in the final twenty minutes of play.  Substitute David Texeira earned a free kick that Mauro Diaz flighted into the Chivas penalty area.  Watson rose to win the header and flicked the ball in front of goal where the onrushing Fabian Castillo slotted home for the lead.

Eight minutes later and FCD were ahead 2-0 and again it was Mauro Diaz starting it off.  His perfectly weighted pass sprung Watson in on goal where he rounded Kennedy and passed into the empty net.  Game, set, match right?  Well not so fast.  The visitors grabbed one back a few minutes later and suddenly the sweat was on again at 2-1.  Not to worry though.  Freekick specialist Michel slammed the comeback door closed with his freekick underneath the Chivas wall providing the 3-1 final score.

FC Dallas leaves the match first place in the MLS Western Conference with the Portland Timbers coming to town next weekend.  Another home win would set FCD off nicely to start the season.  There are concerns though as Dallas lost three defensive midfielders in the Chivas match.  Both Adam Moffat and Andrew Jacobson went off injured while Hendry Thomas saw a red card in the 90th minute.
