Mansfield Summit blast Joshua in playoff win

A hat trick from Jesus Retana lifted Mansfield Summit to a dominant bi-district playoff victory over Joshua Tuesday night.  The second place finisher from District 16-4A had no worries on the night as they cruised right from the opening whistle.

Jesus Retana put Summit ahead after only seven minutes as he headed home the opening goal.  Eleven minutes later it was 2-0 as Matt Vafee found the net with a twenty yard freekick.  Just before halftime Retana put the game to bed heading home a Kevin Trejo corner kick.

Jesus Retana completed his hat trick within thirty seconds of the second half kickoff and it was smooth sailing from there.  Mansfield Summit were able to rest some of their starters a bit in preparation for the next round as Joshua rarely threatened the Summit goal.

“Any games we’ve been successful in are the ones where we can control the tempo right from the start,” Summit coach David McDonald said. “We just pushed and pushed and pushed as hard and fast as we could and tried to get an early goal. That was our strategy all along.”
