Southlake 1 SGP 0 - Becerra header stands up

Little did the fans know just how interesting this opening round playoff match would be as they settled into their seats at Fort Worth Nolan High School Thursday night.  South Grand Prairie arrived as the co-champions of District 8-6A and a sparkling record while Southlake were third in District 7-6A with a fairly pedestrian record on the year.  It became apparent pretty quickly though that you could throw the regular season out the window tonight as Southlake just plain played harder than SGP for long stretches.

Things got started early for the Dragons as Southlake launched in a forty yard free kick in the 5th minute that was right to SGP keeper Asa Rivera.  He caught the long ball cleanly but then was bungled into by a couple of Dragon attackers causing him to drop the ball.  Southlake rolled the ball into the net as the referee whistled the foul.  No goal and a correct call.

As the early minutes of the match progressed it seemed to be the Dragons who had more pep as they were playing with a good energy.  SGP were going to need to show a bit more urgency to have any success. Cole Manning got loose at the top of the box in the 9th minute and curled a nice shot in on frame, but Asa Rivera dove to his right to grab the ball.  Southlake staying on the front foot and looking good.

The Warriors finally got a decent attack in the 13th minute and it took a long run from center back Angel Hernandez just to get that.  When Southlake's JP Magalhaes ripped a shot just wide it was becoming apparent that the underdog might just be the better team in this match.

It took 25 minutes but finally SGP were playing themselves into the match.  They were starting to find some space to play against the Southlake back line. Oliver Callado got the first shot of the night for the Warriors in the 28th as he fired a shot from outside the box that short hopped Dragon keeper Patrick Leal who was able to make the tricky save.  The game had flipped completely and was now being played on the Southlake end.  Too bad SGP had wasted most of the first half.

The final chance of the half fell to Southlake as Angel Hernandez handled the ball in the SGP corner with 20 seconds left.  For no apparent reason the referee stopped the clock with 16 seconds and allowed Southlake to set up the free kick.  No reason to stop the clock at all.  It should have continued to run and the decision would have drastic consequences.  JP Magalhaes curled in the free kick to the near post where Ricardo Becerra headed into the net.  1-0 Southlake at the break.

South Grand Prairie opened the second half with more effort than the first, but were unable to find the tying goal.  The field was tilting towards the Southlake goal as the Warriors were applying more pressure. The Warriors earned a dangerous free kick of their own in the 53rd minute about 23 yards out.  Oliver Callado fired on frame, but it was right at Patrick Leal who punched the ball over the crossbar for a corner kick.

SGP produced another golden chance in the 72nd minute off a corner kick as Quentie Kyeremateng  rose and headed a ball destined for the net.  Cole Manning was waiting on the near post where he blocked the header and cleared.  Time was running short.  The Southlake defense were able to see out the final minutes and despite not generating a single shot in the second half the Dragons had their 1-0 victory.
