Richland crash out of playoffs in Sam Houston upset

Well we have our first big upset in the boys 5A soccer playoffs as Arlington Sam Houston knocked off District 4-5A champions Richland in an opening round match at Pennington Field Thursday night.  Tony Guzman scored the winning goal late in the first overtime to supply the upset.

It was a wild and crazy game as both sides attacked like mad all evening long.  Richland's solid attacking midfield provided shot after shot from distance, while the lack of a holding midfielder left them wide open to the counter attack.  And boy did Sam Houston counter all match.

It had been a year since I had seen the Rebels play, but they were a carbon copy of the 2013 squad.  Great attack, but the formation was a disaster.  The lack of any type of defensive midfielder left them wide open going the other way and the team just showed an overall lack of defensive organization.  If this remains the case they'll always be a fun team to watch, but they will never be anything more than an early round playoff flame out.

Arlington Sam Houston had the players to make them pay.  A very solid centerback pairing allowed them to limit Richland to mostly long range efforts from 20-30 yards out.  The shots were dangerous, but Richland rarely got deep into the SH penalty area.  On the other end the three Sam Houston attackers were able to get behind the Richland defense time after time.

The match went to halftime 1-1 as a Tony Guzman breakaway goal for Sam Houston cancelled out a 16th minute penalty kick from Cristian Cuadra.  The second half saw attack after attack from both teams.  The weak Richland defense allowing Sam Houston to get good chances on almost every attack.  Meanwhile, the Sam Houston defense would sit so deep that they would just invite Richland right back at them.  The Sam Houston centerbacks rarely pushed up past the 30 yard line thus giving acres of space to the talented Richland midifield which had no problem initiating attacks.  Somehow, neither team found the back of the net in the second half and the game would need overtime to find a winner.

In the 88th minute another Richland defensive breakdown allowed Tony Guzman another breakaway right down the middle of the field.  This time he was money as he slotted the ball past Andrew Lyman for the 2-1 lead.  The Rebels pushed hard in the second overtime, but after a solid header from Isaias Guerrero was saved by Leo Lujan the upset was complete.  The District 4-5A champs were sent crashing out of the boys 5A playoffs.
