Richland boys looking for long playoff run

The Richland boys high school soccer team is not satisfied with a 23-1-1 regular season.  They have loftier goals and are still stinging from their one loss this year, a shocking defeat to local rivals Haltom.  It's playoff time and Richland have their sights set on making a long run in the postseason.

Richland meets Cedar Hill in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs next week. "I hear they are big and physical," Richland coach Matt Snow said. "They have a strong defense, and we will have to match up with their best players."

Jorge Cuadra and his brother Cristian, a sophomore, have been a playmaking duo for the Rebels. Cristian has 30 goals and 16 assists. Jorge has 20 goals and 21 assists. But regular-season stats don't matter at this point.

"We have practiced hard every practice, no messing around," Cristian said. "And we play our hardest every game."

When Richland lost its first game of the season, to Haltom with two games remaining, the team bounced back with a 2-0 win against Irving Nimitz and a 4-1 win against Grapevine, which was fighting for a playoff spot.

"Losing brought us down to the level where we know we can be beaten any given day," Snow said. "The way we responded was huge. We got back to doing what we were used to doing and capable of doing."

The surprising Rebels, who weren't considered a threat at the start of the season, hope to finish their underdog year at the state tournament.

"I hope things don't change, and we keep playing our game," Snow said. "We will be facing people we don't know anything about, but when we step on the field, I feel we are capable of beating anybody we play." "The players have bought in. They believe they can do it, and they are ready to do it."
