Richland uses two second half goals to beat Southlake

Southlake traveled to face Richland Friday night in another big District 4-5A clash.  There are four teams fighting it out in the ultra-competitive district. Keller, Keller Central, Southlake and Richland are locked in a duel for playoff positioning and as the season starts to wind down this matchup was a big one.

Southlake was cruising along, but hit a rough patch as they only had a single point to show from their last two district games.  A loss to Keller Central and then a shock draw with Timber Creek has thrown the top of the district into chaos.  Richland was rolling after easily dispatching Fossil Ridge and was looking to push their way right into the title picture with a win on Friday fight.

Richland created the first chance of the game when Jorge Cuadra chipped a perfect ball in behind the Southlake defense for Felix Manzano who flicked past the out rushing Dragon keeper Turner Roberts only to see the ball fly just wide.  The Rebels were intent on defending their home turf as they controlled the opening minutes.

After the initial Richland push the match settled and Southlake began to find their legs forcing the Rebels into some turnovers in the midfield.  The match was being played at a breakneck pace, but twenty minutes in neither side had generated a shot on goal or even earned a corner kick.

The biggest chance of the opening half came with 8 minutes to play when Richland's Justin Puia got loose down the left wing dragging a Southlake center back wide.  Puia crossed into the open space finding Felix Monzano who hit on the volley.  Southlake keeper Turner Roberts made a fantastic save leaping to his right and deflecting the ball off the post where the rebound was cleared to safety.

Southlake had no answer for Richland's Jorge Cuadra.  He was dominating the midfield and testing the Dragon defense with dangerous passes.  The Dragon defense was up to the task though and the match went to halftime scoreless.

Both sides had everything to play for as the second half opened.  The district lead was on the line.  A draw wouldn't settle anything at all.  The opening ten minutes of the second half were much like the first.  Fighting it out in the midfield with neither side generating clear cut attacks.  Southlake had yet to even generate a single shot.

Not surprising though as Coach Oglesby had them keeping only a single forward up top.  Surprising since Richland does not defend well as a team.  The match had the look of only the Rebels generating a goal unless could grab a set piece or catch them on the counter.

In the 58th minute it was actually a Richland set piece that would open the scoring.  A long frekick from Jorge Cuadra hit a Southlake defender in the back and fell to Cristian Cuadra who touched to his right and fired low into the net from ten yards out.

Richland had their lead and Southlake did not look to have the offense to get it back.  Twenty minutes to play.  Despite being down the Dragons continued to only play a single forward.

In the 63rd minute Richland took control as the best player on the field scored a stunner.  Jorge Cuadra found a bit of space and launched a strike from almost 30 yards away.  S had no chance as the curling shot flew past him and into the net.

Fifteen minutes to go and the game looked very comfortable for Richland.  Finally Southlake came out of their shell pulling a center back and adding a second forward.  Too little, too late?  For sure as Richland comfortably saw out the 2-0 victory.

It was Southlake's third straight match without a win and they find themselves in danger of falling all the way from first to fourth in that span.  Richland, meanwhile leap over the Dragons, and depending on other results could find themselves in first place
