Richland Winter Blast ends with no champion

Well it seems the Richland Winter Blast crowned no champion.  A very good El Paso Americas squad won the opening semifinal and awaited the winner of the Southlake - McKinney Boyd clash in the final.  The second semifinal turned out to be quite the early season high school soccer clash as the two sides battled in the cold temperatures.

The Southlake defense was once again on display as the match ended scoreless and went to shootout.  El Paso Americas was rooting for Southlake in the shootout because UIL rules limit teams to only two games per day.  Southlake played their final group game in the morning thus would be ineligible for the final if they won and El Paso was ready to head home.  They didnt care for an 8pm final in the low 30s and they had a 12 hour bus ride still ahead of them.

The shootout went 8 rounds deep where the Dragons Walker Beasley scored.  Turner Roberts made the corresponding save and Southlake advanced.  Thus there was no final as Southlake were not eligible and El Paso were heading home!

Best Teams -
It is not always so, but this time it worked out.  The two teams scheduled for the final were clearly the best squads.

El Paso Americas - A regional qualifier last year they once again have a very good squad.  We should see them make a long run into the playoffs again.  Carlos Licon totally bosses the midfield while Emiliano Gomez is a handful up top.

Southlake - A superior defense and a very organized team.  You might be able to play them 0-0, but they'll be tough to beat.  Unscored on in four matches, but only managed to score 3 themselves.

Biggest Disappointment
Richland - I expected alot more.  Very little discipline or organization.  They'll score goals for sure as they are creative and attack like mad.  The problem is they have no holding mid and the defensive three are average at best.  They won't be able to beat the top teams.
