River Plate takes Dallas Cup XXXV Super Group title

River Plate came into the Dallas Cup XXXV final looking to avenge an earlier loss to the US Under 20s from a week ago.  They definitely looked like the more motivated side controlling play early on.  The US U20s were having trouble maintaining any possession at all, much less any attacking possession.  It was all River in a first half that saw the US only manage a single shot.

River Plate finally broke through in the 35th minute scoring a goal that was exactly identical to a goal they scored on the Americans last Sunday night.  A long throw in was held up well by Juan Kaprov deep inside the penalty area.  He laid the ball off to Lucas Boye who scored with a low shot through a group of defenders.   1-0 River Plate and well deserved.

The goal woke up the USA who finally started getting up the field and into the attack.  Their best chance came just before halftime when Jesus Vazquez whizzed a twenty yard drive just wide of the left post.

Weather moved in over the halftime break and the second half kickoff was delayed by 45 minutes.  The Americans came out flying after the restart with Romain Gall scoring inside the first minute.  He was ruled offside on the goal though.  Correct call.

The US was pushing wingers Zachary Pfeffer and Rubio Rubin very high giving River Plate big problems.  River got it sorted out though and in the 58th impute the rain began to fall.  And it poured, sending the crowd running for cover.  There were exactly 16 people left in the stands as the match hit the hour mark, but the teams fought on.

In the 63rd minute a good run down the right side by Shaquell Moore produced an accurate cross.  Ben Spencer Jr beat his man to the near post, but blazed his right footed volley over the crossbar.  Best chance of the game for the Americans.

The match was stopped in the 65th due to the massive thunderstorm and the teams were sent to the dressing rooms once again.  After a twenty minute delay we were ready to start again.

The US scored in the 68th when Ben Spencer Jr scored off a corner kick.  It was a loose ball in front of goal that Rubio Rubin put off the post.  Spencer was behind the ball when Rubin shot so it seems the call was incorrect.    The American players protested to no avail.

“I thought we were out of gas,” US coach Tab Ramos said. “For the most part, we aren’t used to playing this many competitive games. When you play South American teams, they’re [used to] playing all the time.”

The US was pushing hard though when Kellyn Acosta came on in the 73rd.  Surprising Acosta was used tonight after starting for FC Dallas last night in their MLS win over Toronto FC. River Plate put the match away in the 83rd minute as Lucas Boye put home a shot from 15 yards out.  River Plate had their Dallas Cup title and their revenge.
