South Grand Prairie gives GP first loss of season

Tonight was the big night.  District leaders and undefeated Grand Prairie at 19-0 visiting rivals South Grand Prairie 17-2.  SGP  had this one circled for a solid month since the two teams met at the Gopher Bowl with the Gophers emerging 2-0 victors.  Revenge was the clear theme and a chance to move back into a tie at the top of District 8-6A.  It was going to require the Warriors to do work though to break down that stout GP defense and give them their first blemish of the year.

Let me start by saying this one had it all.  Easily the most entertaining high school soccer game I have covered all season.  Lots of goals.  A questionable penalty call.  Loud and boisterous fans from both sides.  Entertaining stuff.

After a few battles in the midfield the first good shot at goal came in the 18th minute as SGP started a free kick short to Angel Hernandez who ripped a left footed drive just high over the crossbar.  Only a minute later GP earned a free kick of their own and they would cash in.  The long ball went deep into the Warrior penalty box where keeper Asa Rivera came to meet it.  He couldn’t hang on and the ball dropped to Erick Miranda who turned and put it in off the crossbar.  1-0 Grand Prairie.

From there the match devolved into a game of long throw ins as the ball was out of bounds more than it was in play.  Grand Prairie took full advantage pinning SGP in their own zone for long periods.  SGP played right into their hands though by playing so many balls out of play in their own third allowing Cory Dancer to launch throw after throw into the penalty area.   The visitors nearly made it 2-0 in the 30th minute when Nathan Thompson got loose on the back post for a header off another throw in.  The ball was on frame but blocked on the line at the post.

Finally the Warriors broke pressure in the 33rd minute earning a set piece of their own.  Oliver Callado swerved in a low ball that short hopped the keeper.  Raith Houle was there to clean up the scraps and tie the match by flicking home from close range.

Grand Prairie went right back on the attack from there forcing SGP keeper Asa Rivera to save a ball off the line from another long GP throw in.  The match would go to the break 1-1.

SGP came out with more composure to start the second half stringing some passes together and getting on the front foot.  In the 46th another short free kick to Angel Hernandez almost put the home side in front.  Hernandez rifled from almost forty yards on frame where Agustin Cornejo made a dramatic flying save to parry the ball over the crossbar.

It was a signal of things to come though and in the 48th SGP took the lead.  A long throw was not dealt with by the Grand Prairie defense leaving a loose ball in front of goal.  Quentie Kyerematang was there to pounce putting loose ball low past keeper Cornejo.  2-1 to SGP.

Grand Prairie would come right back as a long ball got in behind the SGP defense.  Kyeremateng chased down the GP forward putting in a tackle just as they entered the penalty area.  Both players went down and the referee whistled for a penalty although it looked like Quentie got some ball on the tackle.  Erick Saucedo went right down the middle with his spot kick while Rivera dove to his right.

SGP were clearly rattled by the questionable call and immediately turned over the kickoff leaving Saucedo with a free strike at goal from 25 yards.  His shot whizzed just wide and the score remained 2-2. Twenty six minutes to go and everything to play for.

Grand Prairie were on the front foot from there as Erick Saucedo started to take over.  In the 59th a low strike from Saucedo forced Rivera into a smart save.  Saucedo again in the 65th ripped a worm burner just wide of the right post.  It looked like GP were going to find the winning goal.

Five minutes later Nathan Thompson glanced a header just wide for the Gophers.  The ball went the other way and SGP earned a dangerous free kick at the other end within seconds.  For some reason GP dropped all the way into their own six putting a player on the near post.  This eliminated any offside and allowed the Warrior attackers to flood the front of goal.  The free kick was perfectly curled to the near post where Zach ZuaZua flicked his header into the back side netting.  South Grand Prairie had their lead against the run of play 3-2.

From there Grand Prairie would attack but not be able to break down the center back pairing of Kyeremateng and Hernandez.  Despite some nervy moments South Grand Prairie had their 3-2 victory and hop into a tie with Grand Prairie atop the District 8-6A standings.
