The SMU men's soccer team is finally starting to put it together.  After a difficult start to the 2012 season going winless in three matches, the team swept a pair of games on the East Coast.  Friday they knocked off Dartmouth 2-1 and today they defeated Harvard, 3-2, in double overtime.

Senior Ben Hill, freshman Jacob Gandarilla and sophomore Tyler Engel scored for the Mustangs. With the win, SMU is now 2-2-1 on the season.

"We scored two really, really nice goals in the first half," head coach Tim McClements said. "We had a lot of good play, a lot of good ball movement, and I was very happy the way things went. In the second half, we came out too casual and Harvard made us pay. They are a tough team - very strong in the air - and they were able to pull back into the game. We finally got settled into our game and were able to come away with the win in double overtime. Overall, this was a great weekend for us. Picking up two wins on the road in places where we haven't been before was a very good test for us."

Hill opened the scoring when he netted his first goal of the season in the 19th minute. Engel made a run down field dishing the ball off to freshman Eddie Puskarich. Puskarich sent the ball across the box to Hill who knocked the ball past the diving Harvard goalie for a 1-0 SMU lead.

Gandarilla doubled the score with six seconds remaining in the first half. Freshman Will Smith fired a shot that was saved by Harvard's Joe Festa, but Gandarilla was there to tap home the rebound. The goal was Gandarilla's first collegiate tally, and Smith's assist was his first collegiate point.

Harvard cut SMU's lead in half on a header by Scott Prozeller in the 60th minute. The Crimson knotted the game at two with Oliver White's goal in the 81st minute.

The teams remained tied through regulation and the first overtime period before Engel broke through with a goal of his own in the 105th minute to win the game for the Mustangs. Freshman Derek Schrick slotted a ball through to Tyler Engel who went one on one with the Harvard goalkeeper and scored from six yards out. The goal was Engel's second of the season and second consecutive game-winner. The assist was Schrick's first point as a Mustang.

SMU hosts the SMU Classic Presented by Jason's Deli next weekend at Westcott Field. The Mustangs play Oakland on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and UC-Davis on Sunday at 2:30.  Tulsa will also compete.
