Two of the favorites for the Conference USA title squared off Wednesday night at Westcott Field in Dallas, and senior forward Manuel Mariel's third goal of the season rallied the SMU men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie with South Carolina. The Mustangs and Gamecocks battled through a scoreless first half, in which the Mustangs outshot their guests, 9-5. Then in the 2nd half each team scored with 55 seconds of each other. South Carolina's Blake Brettschneider got South Carolina on the scoreboard first, when he pounced on an errant pass in the SMU defense and blasted a low shot across the goal from about 15 yards out and into the lower left corner of the goal. SMU responded immediately as on their next possession, SMU freshman Arthur Ivo forced his way through the USC defense and into the penalty box, where he was taken down. Mariel converted the ensuing penalty kick to tie the score, 1-1. Even with an additional 44 minutes of playing time, including 20 minutes of overtime, neither team could find the winner. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. SMU held a decided statistical advantage as they outshot South Carolina 21-10 and had 12 corner kicks to USC's three. Each team improved its record to 6-3-2 for the year, but SMU finds itself in a big hole at 0-2-1 in Conference USA play.
