SMU men drop first game of year
Published 9/20/2008 6:00:12 AM by staff from dallas
The SMU men's soccer team suffered its first setback of the year Friday when the Mustangs battled undefeated Northern Illinois to overtime before falling, 1-0 in the first round of the Level 3 & Radisson Hotel Hurricane Classic at the University of Tulsa. SMU left several quality scoring chances slip through unfinished, but it was Northern Illinois who were the aggressors on the evening as they handily outshot SMU.Junior goalkeeper Craig Hill was extraordinary Friday, collecting a career-high 11 saves to keep the Huskies at bay for more than 90 minutes. But Brad Horton ended the drama less than two minutes into the extra session when he converted a pass from Luis de la Cerda for the game-winning goal in the game's 92nd minute. With the win Northern Illinois remains unbeaten on the year at 5-0-2 and will face Tulsa on Sunday. The Mustangs return to the field Sunday morning at 11:30 am when they face Hofstra in the second round of the Level 3 & Radisson Hotel Hurricane Classic before returning home next week to host Tulsa in the Conference USA opener for each team at 7 p.m. Friday night.
