The fifth seed SMU men's soccer team twice rallies from deficits on goals by freshman forward Juan Castillo and junior midfielder Arthur Ivo to earn a 2-2 tie with Creighton and force overtime. The Mustands then won a penalty kick shootout, 5-3, to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
After Creighton had taken a first half lead in the 12th minute of play and it would hold up until Juan Castillo started the Mustang rally with a goal in the 79th minute. Defender Ian Kalis crossed a ball in from the left side to Castillo who headed it home for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.
Creighton took the lead right back in the 80th minute and it looked like they were primed to pull the upset. They held on to the very final minute of the match where Arthur Ivo netted his ninth goal of the season with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation to keep the season alive for SMU (15-2-1). Ivo fired a bullet from 30 yards out that was deflected by a Creighton defender up and over Bluejay goalie Brian Holt.
The teams remained scoreless through two ten minute overtime periods before heading to penalty kicks. SMU won the shootout, scoring all five shots, while Creighton netted three. Goalkeeper Craig Hill stopped the Bluejays' second attempt to give the Mustangs the advantage. Ivo locked up the win by converting SMU's fifth shot.
Hill was phenomenal in net for the Mustangs, making 11 saves on the night and numerous diving saves to keep SMU in the game. The back line held strong, too, accounting for three team saves.
SMU will host William & Mary in the round of 16 next Sunday, Nov. 28 at Westcott Field in Dallas.
